first_imgJan Braai wants the nation to unite around a fire on Heritage Day. Photo: braai.com By Anne Taylor23 September 2013September 24 is Heritage Day in South Africa – a public holiday intended to focus the nation’s attention on the importance of South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage and traditions. It is a day when we are called on to find unity in our diversity.“When our first democratically elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation. We did so knowing that the struggles against the injustice and inequities of the past are part of our national identity; they are part of our culture. We knew that, if indeed our nation has to rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes of division and conflict, we had to acknowledge those whose selfless efforts and talents were dedicated to this goal of non-racial democracy.” – Nelson Mandela, Heritage Day speech, 1996This year’s theme, set by the government, is “reclaiming, restoring and celebrating our living heritage”. In Cape Town, entrance to all Iziko museums will be free during heritage week, from 23 to 29 September.Read about the in_herit festival at Cape Town’s Company Gardens and other Heritage Day activities on Play Your Part: Celebrate SA’s rich heritage For many South Africans, Heritage Day is also unofficially national braai day. Originally the initiative of Jan Scannell, known as Jan Braai, South Africans haven’t needed much encouragement to light a fire and braai. Yes, you can barbeque anywhere, but you can only braai in South Africa!“It is called many things: Chisa Nyama, Braai and Ukosa to name few. Although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when we have something to celebrate we light fires, and prepare great feasts,” Jan writes on his website, braai.com.In a recent inteview with NPR, Jan uses boerewors (a South African sausage) as the perfect analogy to describe the rainbow nation: “You’ve got sausage-making skills from Europe that came with the European settlers to Africa. Then you’ve got spices and the knowledge of how to use them from the East, stuff like coriander, nutmeg, cloves and then in Africa it was very typical to cook all your food on a fire.”Smoke, charred meat and a cold beer – what’s not to love? See you across the flames tomorrow.Read more on SouthAfrica.info: Celebrate South Africa on Braai DayJan Braai’s Top 10 braai tips on CapeTownMagazine.comlast_img read more

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Northern Environmental Action Team is hosting a series of sessions looking at Northern Farmer Connections. The Northern Farmer Connections session is an informal evening to learn about what NEAT is planning in order to learn about and support local producers throughout the Peace. It will also allow farmers to ask questions and network with other local producers.Bess Legault, Northern Co-hort Coordinator with NEAT, says there is a growing interest in agriculture within the Peace Region. “In the last couple of years, there’s been an interest in the potential for a horticultural/agricultural industry or industry support in the Peace Region.”Legault hopes these sessions will create a local food system collectively and collaboratively with local producers in order to bring food to the local purchaser.“So we’re going to learn from one another what’s working and what’s not working. Is there an opportunity for farmers to work together to be able to supply a grocery store instead of just a farmers’ market?”.There are no production guidelines as both large and small producers are welcome to attend the sessions. The first session is taking place in Fort St. John on November 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the NEAT Office. For more information and a list of sessions happening near you, you can visit https://neat.ca/event/last_img read more

first_imgJerusalem: Israel’s prime minister is portraying an Arab lawmaker, Ahmad Tibi, as a threat to national security in a campaign that critics say questions the loyalty of the country’s Arab citizens ahead of April elections. Benjamin Netanyahu has been slumping in the polls after the announcement of his pending corruption indictment. The prime minister has been repeating a campaign mantra, using his own nickname: “Bibi or Tibi.” The slogan highlights Netanyahu’s efforts to paint his challengers as conspiring with Arab Israelis and a hostile media to oust him. Tibi says he is concerned about what he views as Netanyahu’s attempt to demonize Israel’s Arab minority. Arabs make up about 20 per cent of Israel’s 9 million residents. They hold full citizenship rights but have faced decades of discrimination.last_img read more

first_imgWashington: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the recent arrest of a woman who allegedly breached security at President Donald Trump’s private Florida club while carrying Chinese passports and a flash drive containing malware, is an example of the threat Beijing poses to Washington. In a TV interview on Friday, Pompeo declined to provide additional details related to his claim but said: “I think this tells the American people the threat that China poses, the efforts they’re making inside the US, not only against government officials but more broadly.” CNN reported on Wednesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had begun investigating the possibility that the incident at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property was an espionage effort. The US official who confirmed the espionage probe said the FBI is doing what it has to do in these circumstances, when there is a foreign national involved and a possibility of counterintelligence or cyber-security issues. Earlier this week, Trump dismissed concerns about the incident when asked about potential Chinese espionage. Hedescribed it a “fluke situation,” praising both the Secret Service and the receptionist who stopped the accused, Yujing Zhang. Zhang was charged with making false statements to a federal officer and entering a restricted area on Monday. A detention hearing is scheduled for April 8 and arraignment for April 15. While investigators have not yet revealed conclusive evidence suggesting a link to Chinese espionage, the breach has highlighted long-brewing concerns about security at Mar-a-Lago. The club allows members, their guests and people attending events to enter and move around, even as Trump makes frequent visits to the property.last_img read more
