Last weekend in Anaheim, California, one of the biggest events for the music products industry took place. The National Association of Music Merchants, commonly known as NAMM, held their annual convention, at the Anaheim Convention Center, over the course of four days. Closed to the public, the event allows musicians and industry personnel from around the globe to walk freely among the nearly 7,000 vendors and 1,800 exhibiting companies. Product demo’s are also put on by musicians that have deals with various companies. Joe Lamond, President and CEO of NAMM, said, “The NAMM Show gathers our industry as a global community, which in turn drives opportunity. This event once again proved to be a stable, reliable platform for growth, both in business and in professional development, as well as in solidarity to share our common vision in creating a world of more music makers.”The show is so gigantic that it’s impossible to see everything over the four days. 125 countries were represented and over 100,000 people attended. Attendees included retailers, media, artists and endorsees, and exhibitors, as well as guests, college music students of NAMM GenNext, school music teachers and administrators involved with Music Education Day, and NAMM member buyers. Each day brought new opportunities for attendees to check out the “Breakfast of Champions,” featuring various industry speakers that kicked off each day’s events before doors opened to the convention. TEC Tracks sessions were available all day long, where attendees could learn more about sound, studio, and stage topics. Speakers during these sessions included Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison, Aerosmith engineer and producer Jack Douglas, and surprise guest panelist Joe Perry, co-founder and lead guitarist of Aerosmith.Photo Credit: Jesse Grant/Getty ImagesOn Saturday night, Perry was recognized at The NAMM TEC Awards, which acknowledged the best and brightest in professional audio and sound production. Actor and musician Johnny Depp presented Perry with the Les Paul Award, which is presented annually to a remarkably-distinguished and accomplished individual from the music industry. In honor of him receiving this award, songs and recognizable riffs from Aerosmith could be heard throughout the weekend at various events.Musical events that filled the weekend included Richie Sambora and Orianthi, former centerfielder for the New York Yankees Bernie Williams and his All-Star Band, with special guests Poncho Sanchez and Keb’ Mo’, and Ronnie Spector and The Ronettes. One of the hardest invites to come by was for the Bob Weir VIP event put on by D’Angelico guitar. The event featured Guns n Roses’ Matt Sorum, The Rascals’ Gene Cornish, The Doobie Brothers’ Jeff Skunk Baxter, and soul-rock sensation Robert Randolph. “Only A River,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Jack Straw,” The Beatles’ “Come Together,” “The Other One,” and “Touch of Grey” were among many of the songs featured on the set list for the evening. The rare, and much needed, rain that fell during the convention did not keep people away from the events that filled the days. Many people experienced sore feet from endless hours of walking, hunger due to long lines at the food booths, and late night evenings filled with musical events and hours of catching up with industry friends not seen in a year. Drum circles, ukulele circles, and many more inviting musical moments were shared with attendees throughout the weekend. With so many musicians in the same place, magical moments were bound to happen. Check out the moment that Stevie Wonder surprised a NAMM attendee as he jumped on stage unexpectedly. NAMM is known to have the unexpected happen. The following video courtesy of Grayson Erhard, the musician Wonder joined: Load remaining images Words by Sarah Bourque.Photography courtesy of Paul Citone Photography, and Jesse Grant/Getty Images.
Kodiak, Alaska — one of the only cities in the U.S. to generate almost 100 percent of its electric power from renewable resources — was celebrated for its environmental sustainability in a lecture Tuesday night in DeBartolo Hall. The lecture was presented as part of the 12th ND Energy Week, an awareness week hosted by ND Energy and the Student Energy Board that promotes education and discussion about energy sustainability.Darron Scott, CEO of the Kodiak Electric Association Inc. (KEA) said the city’s initiative to implement clean power began in the early 2000s. KEA is Kodiak’s locally owned and operated electric cooperative.A primary reason KEA decided to switch to clean energy was due to the economic stability hydroelectric power and wind power offered, he said. The price of diesel fuel is highly volatile, he said, which can prove costly.Kodiak’s local industries looking to keep the price of power low was a major proponent of the switch, he said.“We were getting a lot of pressure [to transition] from seafood processors and from the government facilities,” he said.Scott said the Kodiak community embraced the transition for its economic benefits. Because the electric grid on the island is isolated from other cities, the clean power initiative serves Kodiak exclusively.“The benefit from [the wind turbines] comes directly to the people on the island,” he said.Scott said while the project began as a largely independent, local initiative, he attributes part of its success to government funding.“[While KEA was] getting ready to put the project in motion, the state [put] out a big grant for renewable energy projects,” he said.Scott said Kodiak’s transition to sustainable energy was gradual. It began with the introduction of hydroelectric plants, then expanded to include three wind turbines. He said KEA was tentative about wind power at first because it is more challenging to integrate into a power grid.“We didn’t have any real data on how the wind turbines reacted in the [electrical] system,” he said. After gathering close data on its first three wind turbines, the company later doubled the amount to six, he said.Today, KEA generates 82 percent of its electricity using hydroelectric power and 17 percent with wind power, Scott said.Scott said since switching to renewable energy, Kodiak has seen immense economic benefits.“Just the wind turbines alone have saved about 14 million gallons of diesel for our town,” he said. The amount of diesel saved already amounts to more than the initial cost of the project, he added.“We’re nine years in — it’s already paid for itself,” he said.Scott said the project has also helped Kodiak make progress in combating pollution. KEA’s renewable energy has reduced the city’s carbon dioxide emission by 150,000 tons.KEA has plans to expand its renewable energy initiative even further, Scott said.“We’re moving forward with more dispatchable renewable power we can rely on, which is [hydropower],” he said.Scott said he believes it is possible for the U.S. to make a full transition to renewable energy in the near future.“This model — it should work,” he said. “ … The technology’s there.”Tags: clean energy week, darron scott, kodiak
Influential Harps midfielder Michael Funston has been ruled out for tonight’s match against Waterford at the RSC due to illnes.Ollie Horgan has a threadbare squad after losing another two key players prior to tonight’s crucial First Division clash with Waterford United at the RCS.Horgan knew last week that he had to plan without the influential duo of Damien McNulty and Packie Mailey due to suspension, while Caoimhe Bonner is still serving his suspension for his red card against Wexford a fortnight ago.Gareth Harkin who has enjoyed a fine run of form of late, was ruled out during the week due to work commitments. However in the last 24 hours Horgan has lost the services of Michael Funston due to an illness and Darragh Black to injury. The absence of the midfielder is a huge blow to Harps, who could certainly do with his energy, drive and experience tonight.Black sustained a nasty injury at training on Wednesday night and is expected to be out for at least six weeks. It is unfortunate for Black who looked likely to earn a start, after a number of impressive displays for the reserve side in recent weeks. It now leaves Horgan without five regular starters, and with a number of players leaving the club recently it leaves his squad very thin for what is always a difficult fixture in Waterford.Harps have proved to be an extremely difficult opponent to beat this season, losing only five matches all season is a testament to their defensive solidity. However, they desperately need a win to keep their promotion hopes alive.A win tonight would keep them in the hunt especially with winnable games against Cobh Ramblers and Shamrock Rovers B in the next few weeks.A victory would also boost confidence ahead of next week’s crucial FAI cup tie against Wexford Youths. Chelsea midfielder Cesc on emotional farewell: This career goes so fastby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveChelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has spoken of his final game before joining AS Monaco. The midfielder was handed a rare start and given the captain’s armband for his final appearance in a blue shirt for the FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.Fabregas missed a first-half penalty but Maurizio Sarri’s side ran out 2-0 winners thanks to Alvaro Morata’s double. The Blues boss withdrew Fabregas in the closing minutes so supporters could give the Spaniard a deserved send off after 198 games for the club.”Time flies,” said Fabregas. “It feels like last week that I started playing professionally and now it’s more than 15 years.”It goes so fast and you have to be ready every three days, for the criticism with everyone saying how good you are and the ups and downs.”It feels like growing older it never goes away it is technique. Physicality goes away. Technicality stays with you.”Nottingham Forest keeper Luke Steele denied Fabregas the perfect send off when he kept out the former Arsenal man’s spot-kick.Fabregas added: “I saw the keeper going down in the middle of the run and I thought I had it. It was unfortunate.”The day I got 100 caps for Spain I also missed a penalty, so it was destiny.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Gianluigi Buffon is expected to complete his move to Paris Saint-Germain this week after agreeing on a two-year deal, reports Calcio MercatoThe 40-year-old is out of contract at Juventus at the end of this month and had been expected to retire from professional football at the end of this season. However, Buffon held a press conference last month and announced that he would be leaving Juventus after 17 years and confirmed that he had retracted his decision to retire this year. The 2006 World Cup winner has received a numerous amount of offers and is now set to complete his free transfer to PSG this week with an announcement expected either on Tuesday or Wednesday.Fiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.The move will likely see current PSG number one Areola being relegated to the bench, who has now accepted the likely hood of his “idol” joining the Ligue 1 champions.“Buffon is my idol and I could find myself working with him, we’ll see what happens,” he told Telefooot.Reports state that Buffon has agreed to a two-year contract that will see him earn €7m per season plus bonuses and will allow him to take on an ambassadorial role for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Vinicius Junior’s agent, Frederico Peña, is convinced that the Brazilian youngster will win the hearts of everybody sooner than expected. The main talk of the week despite all detractors has been Vinicius Junior without question, the new Real Madrid talent who has brought back hope to all the Madridistas that were heartbroken after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.Every single week that the fans looked at what the Portuguese player was doing in Italy, most of them wept because of how much they missed Ronaldo. They really needed a “pick me up” in the form of a new talent who could get them back on track, they believed that Neymar or Mbappé were the only answer for this void that Cristiano left. But they never imagined that Florentino Perez had an 18-year old ace up his sleeve in the form of Vinicius Junior, the Flamengo prodigy who is already making an impact in the club and has everybody in Madrid longing for a new star to be born. The lad’s development was delayed due to Julen Lopetegui’s ineptitude and inability to recognize talent in front of his very eyes, it was clear that Vinicius had something different the club needs right now and he could’ve saved the Spaniard’s career but his ego was bigger than that.HASTA FINAL, VAMOS REAL!! 💪🏾⚽️⭐️ pic.twitter.com/ex6OLWymmb— Vinicius Jr (@vini11Oficial) November 3, 2018Now that Santiago Solari has given him the chance to shine, the lad has seized the opportunity and sparked a worldwide debate about his role in Real Madrid despite his age. While there are still a lot of incredulous people who keep mocking the kid, the reality is that he has managed to change the landscape for Real Madrid overnight, Santiago Solari is even deciding right now if the lad is good enough to start the game against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League. But looking at the people who are closest to him, his manager Frederico Peña is one of the people who are convinced of the player’s talents and he predicted that everybody will see Vinicius for what he truly is very soon: one of the best players in the world.Por ser quem sou e por tudo que superei na vida, eu te agradeço Deus 🙌🏿⚽️🤩 pic.twitter.com/5LOhi32YPS— Vinicius Jr (@vini11Oficial) November 4, 2018Mourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.“Vinicius has enamored the fans because he is a natural born winner. He truly hates losing and the fans love that about him,” said Peña to Diario AS.“Watching him play really is a gift, but I still amaze with thinking that he still has so many years ahead of him to improve even further. He is growing little by little as a player.”“We are hoping that he becomes part of the starting eleven very soon, but Vinicius is the first one who knows how difficult this is because the squad has great quality. Isco, Asensio, and Bale are all established players inside the team.”Although it’s also true that in football, everything can change in a matter of seconds. I obviously don’t think he is the team’s leader right now, he still needs to adapt to this new country, the language, and the culture.”It’s very important for Vinicius to go step by step, he is far too young to be the leader of the squad right now. However, nobody will stop ‘Vini’ once they give him enough confidence.”“He is aware that he will have to endure a lot of pressure if he wants to be a big player for Real Madrid, he also knows that he will have to give that extra effort. Right now, he already is delivering excellent performances.”“He isn’t scared of anything and he has a strong mind to go through any type of situation, everything is happening so fast for him.”“Every single player feels pressure, Vinicius feels it as well because he is human. But he does have an advantage with it because he already lived pressure back in Brazil,” he concluded.#UCL 🤩🔝 pic.twitter.com/wjCucdNdAa— Vinicius Jr (@vini11Oficial) November 6, 2018How long do you think it will take Vinicius to become a part of Real Madrid’s starting eleven? Bayern München’s president Uli Hoeness, wanted to remind everybody that the German giants won’t be favorites vs Borussia Dortmund. If you thought that next weekend will be exciting only because England will have a Derby, Bayern’s president Uli Hoeness was gracious enough to remind everybody that Germany will also have Der Klassiker between the Bavarian squad and Borussia Dortmund. This match is arguably the biggest event in the Bundesliga every year, it usually has the bigger club as the absolute favorite but this season things are going to be very different.Dortmund is currently amongst the most exciting squads in all of Europe, their latest defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League is no indicator of the real level of performance they have brought to the domestic competition this season.Bayern München’s top board members are very aware of how complicated next Saturday’s match will be and they won’t let the illusion of Dortmund’s latest defeat deceive them in any shape or form. The German giants have gotten too many negative results in the current season, this is what will keep them from getting too confident and the perfect excuse for them to go all out against the Bundesliga’s revelation.⭐️ #UCL-Gruppe A nach vier Spielen:1⃣ Borussia Dortmund (9 Pkt.)2. @Atleti (9)3. @ClubBrugge (4)4. @AS_Monaco (1) pic.twitter.com/kyYu0A4XlT— Borussia Dortmund (@BVB) November 6, 2018Regardless of how much power Bayern München has for this upcoming Der Klassiker, there is no way to overlook the sensational performances that many of the young talented players Borussia Dortmund have been delivering every single week.Starting with their ‘secret weapon’ Jadon Sancho, the young English international who is already established as one of the best players in Europe after only a few months of constant delivery of stellar performances for his new club.We can also mention the great first season that Moroccan left-back Achraf Hakimi is also having with Borussia Dortmund, the Real Madrid product who is destined to go back to Los Blancos and become the Marcelo replacement the club had been looking for so long. And what can we even say about young sensation Christian Pulisic, an already well-established star inside the club who is arguably amongst the most talented players of his generation and the United States’ best footballer today? All these kids are being led by German winger Marco Reus, an experienced forward who is starting to look like he could be about to have the best season of his career.Merson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.”We have a young squad in transition, and a coach who has to implement his way without completely. You have to have a little patience.”-Uli Hoeness#FCBAEK#UCL[@altobelli13] pic.twitter.com/jbaMVL9cNO— Bavarian Tweets (@BavarianTweets) November 7, 2018All these elements haven’t gone through Bayern’s radar without getting unnoticed, the whole club is worried about next Saturday’s match and president Uli Hoeness already knows how difficult it will be for them to win.“You can’t go to Dortmund and say that you want to secure three points. Dortmund have had a very good season so far, no doubt about it,” said Uli via Goal.“We do not go to Dortmund as favorites, but as underdogs – for the first time in a long time.”“We have to make sure we play a good game there and then we’ll see what happens.”“Don’t always be so negative. The season has just begun, we have a team in transition, a young coach who has to settle in here and you have to be patient,” he added.“Four weeks ago you all complained that the Bundesliga is getting boring again and now it is no longer boring but exciting and now that doesn’t suit you.”“At some point you should agree on what you actually want. We’re doing you a few favors right now.”All what president Uli Hoeneß said in the mixed zone after tonight’s game. pic.twitter.com/ogK6rYxyyI— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 8, 2018Who will win the next Der Klassiker between Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund?
