first_img30 May 2012 South Africa possesses sound knowledge gained from over 25 years’ experience that makes it more than competent to run a large nuclear power plant, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe told the National Nuclear Energy Conference on Tuesday. In a video message to conference, Motlanthe said South Africa had developed the complex overall systems required to competently operate and maintain a large nuclear power plant. “However, South Africa’s nuclear history goes back much further than that – it actually goes back to the mid-1940s, a period of over 60 years,” Motlanthe said. “This makes South Africa one of the oldest nuclear countries in the world. We have a long, proud history in the field of nuclear science.” Currently, state company Eskom runs the only nuclear power station in the country, Koeberg, located 30km north of Cape Town. The government has committed itself to producing an additional 9 600 Megawatts of nuclear power for the country’s electricity grid.Power plants ‘need to be spread geographically’ Most of South Africa’s coal and electricity generation is clustered in the eastern parts of the country, requiring very long high-voltage supply lines to distribute electricity across the country. Describing this scenario as “strategically unwise” in the longer term, Motlanthe said electricity needed to be produced in other parts of the country, which in turn required the use of energy sources other than coal. “Nuclear power is ideal in this sense, because we can build large nuclear power plants at points around our southern coastline, and potentially elsewhere in the future.”South Africa ‘could become nuclear exporter’ The construction of a nuclear power plant was a major task that would bring economic benefits to the local industry, which could play a major role in the construction and fabrication of nuclear power plants, Motlanthe said. “In fact, it is desirable that South African industry place itself in the position to be able to export nuclear power components internationally.” South Africa is already a world leader in the export of nuclear pharmaceuticals for medical use, exporting to some 60 countries. Nuclear analytical processes are also used constantly in industry, agriculture and elsewhere in the country. He urged the industry to forge international partnerships with companies in the nuclear sector, while calling on companies wishing to gain entry into nuclear power construction to ensure that they acquired the necessary quality assurance culture and practise at an early stage. “South Africa possesses a well-established system of nuclear facility operations. This includes construction and process licensing, nuclear construction and fabrication regulation, health and safety monitoring, and the training of the required skilled personnel. All of this is directly linked to general safety considerations.” Nuclear safety assurance was most important for public acceptance of the nuclear power industry, and South Africa’s strong record in this regard should be maintained as a primary foundation of the industry, Motlanthe said. first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Throughout the 2015 growing season, we have heard about the challenges farmers are dealing with when it comes to disease and pest pressures, the unforgiving onslaught of thunderstorm after thunderstorm and what seems to be endless amounts of rain flooding out would-be flourishing corn and bean fields across Ohio. The weekly crop progress reports have pegged the northwest part of Ohio as the spot that was getting the brunt of the punishing weather and I have heard from farmers in that area about how bad things were. But, it wasn’t until a trip to that part of the state on July 21st that I truly understood the breadth of the unfortunate situation.I considered this a warmup to what is yet to come for my trips on the Ohio and Pro Farmer Crop Tours. Here are just some of the pictures that were collected during our recent drive through Logan, Auglaize, Allen and Putnam counties. A corn field with a temporary pond on St Rt 198 just north of Wapak in Auglaize County. A charcoal colored wheat field half harvested in Allen County. A small patch of soybeans trying to make a late run through some corn stalks from a year ago in Allen County. Water logged soybeans in Allen County. An Allen County corn field that show major signs of too much rain. A struggling corn field west of Elgin, Ohio. Middle Point, Ohio is where I found this field. A soybean field in Wetzel, Ohio has a long way to go. This Grover Hill, Ohio corn field was one of the worst of the day. Had to get up close to see this field of soybeans in Grover Hill, Ohio.last_img read more

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts Tags:#search#web Microsoft is so confident that its search engine Bing outperforms Google that is has created the Bing It On Challenge. But an academic study released earlier this year suggests that the best engine for you depends on the terms you’re searching. The marketing campaign (tag line: “Break The Google Habit”) was announced Thursday on the Microsoft blog, and it is modeled on the 1980s Pepsi Challenge.Like the Pepsi Challenge, this challenge pits two market leaders in a blind, head-to-head test. Then it was Pepsi and Coke, now it’s Bing and Google. You can go to a special site to conduct five searches and get two blind lists of results. You rate each list for how it satisfied your search. Microsoft is wagering that a lot of Google users will be surprised to find out they like Bing results best. When I took the challenge, Google won 3-1 with one draw.I half-suspect that I picked Google’s results because I habitually use Google, and its results somehow feel more familiar to me when they are presented alongside Bing results.More comprehensive tests done by Microsoft, results of which were announced yesterday on the Bing blog, found that people preferred Bing results over Google by a margin of two-to-one in a blind test. But recent research indicates that I preferred Google results more because of the actual search terms I used than any other factor. The study, by Indian researchers and published in January in the journal International Journal on Computer Science and Engineering suggests Bing and Google have complementary strengths based on search terms themselves. For example, I used simple and short terms: Dave Copeland, Boston restaurants, social media in the classroom. The study by Tauqeer Ahmad Usmani of Kumaun University, Durgesh Pant of Uttarakhand Open University and Dr. Ashutosh Kumar Bhatt of the Birla Institute of Applied Science, found that Google outperforms Bing on simple one-word queries. Bing generally delivered more precise results for simple, multi-word queries and complex multi-word queries.Google Remains More RelativeIn addition to measuring the precision of simple one-word, simple multi-word and complex multi-word search queries in both Google and Bing, the researchers measured the relative recall of each — that is, how many of the sites returned were relevant. In all three categories of search terms, Google returned more-relative results than Bing. That means that in simple multi-word and complex multi-word queries, Bing may give the site you’re looking for as a top result, but Google will more often give a wider range of relevant results to your search. center_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… dave copeland 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo U.S. Representative Justin Amash, the first Republican in Congress to say President Donald Trump committed an impeachable offense, quit the Republican Party on Thursday with a blistering attack on politics that puts party over principle. The congressman from Michigan, who drew a barrage of criticism from fellow Republicans after he laid out a case for Trump’s impeachment, said he has become disenchanted with a political system that is “trapped in a partisan death spiral.”“The two-party system has evolved into an existential threat to American principles and institutions,” he wrote in a Washington Post opinion piece published on the U.S. Independence Day holiday.“Instead of acting as an independent branch of government and serving as a check on the executive branch, congressional leaders of both parties expect the House and Senate to act in obedience or opposition to the president and their colleagues on a partisan basis,” Amash wrote.A member of Congress since 2011, Amash, 39, made some high-profile decisions in recent months that chronicled his growing disdain for Trump and subsequent drift from the party. It was his decision to speak out on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian activities during the 2016 presidential election that drew the president’s fury – and a prompt Republican primary challenge.Amash said in May that the Mueller report showed Trump had obstructed justice, bucking his party and joining Democrats in castigating the president for his actions. “President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct,” he said.Amash’s comments on the Mueller report echoed the conclusions of many Democrats, but Democrats are divided about impeachment. Most Republicans are still standing by the president at a time of economic growth, turbulent markets and global trade tensions.Trump quickly returned fire by calling Amash a lightweight and a loser. Soon after, Jim Lower, a Michigan state legislator who described himself as “pro-Trump,” said he would challenge Amash in the 2020 congressional race in Michigan, a state Trump won in 2016.The president welcomed Amash’s news with an acrimonious personal attack on Twitter that also referenced Amash’s primary challenge. “Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is ‘quitting’ the Party,” he said.Amash has signaled he would consider running as a libertarian against Trump in 2020, but he made no mention of that Thursday. Amash’s office did not return calls for comment. The leading Democrat to challenge Trump in 2020, former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, was asked about Amash’s departure while campaigning in Iowa. “Where there’s faith, there’s hope,” he quipped. In his opinion piece, Amash said he believed that most Americans are not rigidly partisan and do not feel well represented by either party. In February, he became the lone Republican to co-sponsor a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to reject the emergency Trump declared at the U.S.-Mexico border to build a wall there, in a stinging reprimand to the president.Last month, Amash left the conservative House Freedom Caucus he helped found, whose members usually defend Trump. A libertarian who has targeted government overspending, his July Fourth announcement cast a wide invitation.“No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us,” Amash said. “If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it.”WhatsApp <a href=’http://revive.newsbook.com.mt/www/delivery/ck.php?n=ab2c8853&amp;cb={random}’ target=’_blank’><img src=’https://revive.newsbook.com.mt/www/delivery/avw.php?zoneid=97&amp;cb={random}&amp;n=ab2c8853&amp;ct0={clickurl_enc}’ border=’0′ alt=” /></a>last_img read more
