A day after the Income Tax Department conducted raids at 22 locations in New Delhi and adjoining areas in connection with the alleged benami (proxy) land deals linked to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and his family members, a clash broke out between workers of the RJD and the BJP in Patna on Wednesday. Several workers from both parties were injured. The BJP later filed a police complaint against Mr. Prasad and his two Minister-sons for “orchestrating the attack on the BJP office”.At least six partymen from the BJP and others from the RJD were injured in the clash which broke out after hundreds of bare-bodied RJD youth wing workers marched to the BJP office at Beerchand Patel Path, shouting slogans against BJP and its party leader Sushil Kumar Modi for “continuously attacking the RJD chief and his family”.The protesting RJD partymen were, apparently, also furious at the Income Tax raid on Mr. Prasad and his kin on Tuesday.Carrying party flags, the RJD youth wing workers reached the BJP office, just 100 metres from the RJD office on the same road, and a clash broke out. They exchanged baton blows and threw bottles and stones at each other. Several vehicles parked outside the BJP office too were damaged. The police had a tough time controlling the situation. In the BJP office at Patna, no senior leader was present as the party had called a State-wide dharna against corruption, while demanding that the two sons of the RJD chief [Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav] be sacked from the Nitish Cabinet.‘Shameful attack’“It was an attack on the BJP office to gag the voice of the opposition,” alleged senior State BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi.Describing the attack as “shameful”, State BJP president Nityanand Rai said it happened “on the direction of Lalu Prasad Yadav…we’ll take this issue to the court and not be distracted from the real issue of corruption charges against Lalu Prasad and his family members.”A delegation of BJP leaders met the Director General of Police P.K. Thakur and demanded action against RJD workers. “We will take action after verifying the evidence,” said Additional Director General of Police (headquarter), S.K. Singhal.RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha blamed the BJP workers for first throwing stones and beer bottles on the “peaceful march” of RJD workers. “As many 26 RJD workers were injured…the police should investigate how beer bottles came in the BJP office in dry Bihar,” Mr. Jha told journalists in Patna.

Melbourne: Former captain Ricky Ponting feels constant scrutiny on Steve Smith and David Warner following their comeback could be “unsettling” for the Australian team during the World Cup in the United Kingdom. Ponting, who will be part of Australia’s support staff during the mega event, said Smith and Warner will have to be prepared for constant criticism from the UK crowd. Their two-year ban for ball-tampering ends later this month and they will feature in the IPL beginning March 23. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football together”I don’t think it is much of a challenge internally around the players. You’d like to think that those guys are having conversations now, so they’re not leaving it to the last minute and just be exposed to this thing that could be derailing to a team,” Ponting told cricket.com.au. “I’m sure this would have been talked about at a higher level for a long time – how do we integrate them back in? How do they fit in? How is it all going to be seamless? But the hardest part for those guys is going to be the public perception of us, especially in England,” said the two-time World Cup winning captain. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian OpenConstant attention on Smith and Warner could affect the team during the World Cup, said Ponting. They’re coming back into a World Cup in the UK – they shouldn’t be expecting too many pats on the back over there. They’re going to cop it everywhere they go. They’ve got to know that, they’ve got to accept that and understand that. “The team needs to as well, because that could also be something that could be unsettling for a team.” Australia go into the World Cup as defending champions but this time, they don’t go enter the tournament as outright favourites. Ponting feels things could get a lot easier for Warner and Smith if they are amongst the runs. “I think they are well equipped (to handle the scrutiny), but I think it could be a shock for them by the same token when they come back. They have to expect the absolute worst and then anything better than that is going to be a bonus for them. That would be the way I would approach it if I was them.
Washington: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the recent arrest of a woman who allegedly breached security at President Donald Trump’s private Florida club while carrying Chinese passports and a flash drive containing malware, is an example of the threat Beijing poses to Washington. In a TV interview on Friday, Pompeo declined to provide additional details related to his claim but said: “I think this tells the American people the threat that China poses, the efforts they’re making inside the US, not only against government officials but more broadly.” CNN reported on Wednesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had begun investigating the possibility that the incident at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property was an espionage effort. The US official who confirmed the espionage probe said the FBI is doing what it has to do in these circumstances, when there is a foreign national involved and a possibility of counterintelligence or cyber-security issues. Earlier this week, Trump dismissed concerns about the incident when asked about potential Chinese espionage. Hedescribed it a “fluke situation,” praising both the Secret Service and the receptionist who stopped the accused, Yujing Zhang. Zhang was charged with making false statements to a federal officer and entering a restricted area on Monday. A detention hearing is scheduled for April 8 and arraignment for April 15. While investigators have not yet revealed conclusive evidence suggesting a link to Chinese espionage, the breach has highlighted long-brewing concerns about security at Mar-a-Lago. The club allows members, their guests and people attending events to enter and move around, even as Trump makes frequent visits to the property.
If averaging 20 points per game is the traditional benchmark of the NBA star, scoring 30 a night vaults a player into another category entirely. Not including this year’s early hopefuls — Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans and Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder — it’s been done 65 times in all of NBA and ABA history, most often by the Michael Jordans and Wilt Chamberlains of the world. Joining that rarified club, or even coming within striking distance of it, is a big deal. Before he had an off night against the Sixers on Monday, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan was positioned to join that group. And given how much freedom to shoot he’s been granted in the Raptors’ offense, he’ll probably flirt with the 30-PPG barrier again before the season is over. Considering that DeRozan set a career high in scoring last season with 23.5 points a game, his sustained run at the 30-point level has been a revelation. In the NBA, players don’t just wake up with an extra 6 or 7 points per game in their pockets.DeRozan’s improvement is especially rare for a player who already scores a lot: Among all the players in NBA history who improved on their existing career high in scoring by at least 5 PPG in a season, DeRozan currently has the 18th-highest scoring average. It’s a leap nearly identical to the one Steph Curry made last season.DeRozan has continued a long trend of dragging his efficiency up to match his perpetually high usage — despite the additional workload this season, he’s up to 80th in true shooting percentage among qualified scorers1For the purposes of this story, a player qualified for the league leaderboard if he played 12.2 minutes per scheduled team game, which works out to about 1,000 minutes in a normal 82-game season. this year, which is a career high for him. Part of that is DeRozan benefitting from the Raptors’ faster pace this season — they’re averaging 2.1 more possessions per game this year than last — even if that’s not always coach Dwane Casey’s preferred way to play. And in the half-court, he’s developed a near-mastery of the two-man game with teammate Jonas Valanciunas, with both players ranking among the league’s most efficient in the pick-and-roll. DeRozan’s probably sinking his deep 2s (a longtime staple of his game, much to statheads’ chagrin) at an unsustainably high rate, but he’s also hitting far fewer of his 3s than he did last year, so that should balance out.But DeRozan may also have maxed out just how much impact a player of his particular style can have. Among the 86 cases since the merger where an NBA player scored at least 28 points per game in a season — including six players so far this year — DeRozan is tied for the eighth-lowest Box Plus/Minus. As a group, those players averaged an offensive BPM of +6.1; DeRozan’s is only +3.8. And although the Raptors have the second-best offensive efficiency in the NBA this season, their offense scores only 0.4 more points per 100 possessions when DeRozan is in the game than when he’s on the bench.Obviously, some of that is the residue of a relatively deep team being able to press that advantage against other teams’ reserves. But to use DeRozan’s most common floor-mates as comparison points, the Raptors’ offense loses 5.9 points per 100 possessions when Kyle Lowry exits the game and 6.6 points per 100 possessions when Patrick Patterson leaves the court. And then there’s his porous defense: His defensive BPM ranks 17th-worst among that group of 28-point scorers, and Toronto opponents are scoring 4.2 more points per 100 possessions with him on the floor than off.In other words, the metrics say DeRozan’s overall impact on the game isn’t anywhere near as valuable as his raw scoring would suggest.Perhaps none of this should come as a surprise. When I analyzed NBA players and sorted them into archetypes for a story in October, I found that DeRozan belongs to a class of player I dubbed “one-dimensional scorers” — players characterized by very high usage rates, good numbers in shooting efficiency and assists, and almost zero contributions on the boards or on defense. That kind of player is custom-built to put points on the board, and DeRozan is scoring the 10th-most points per game of anybody in that classification since the merger. But like DeRozan, they also lack in other areas of the game, and it almost always makes them less valuable than we’d expect based on their scoring averages alone. For instance, using all qualified players since the merger, I ran a regression that used each player’s points-per-game average in a given season to predict his Box Plus/Minus (to measure his overall performance, regardless of how he generated his value), then separated the results out by player archetype. The archetype that underperformed its predicted BPM the most (by far) was DeRozan’s group, the one-dimensional scorers, a trend that can be seen clearly when we graph them in comparison with all other archetypes: It’s not impossible for a one-dimensional scorer to have an outsized impact on the game, even relative to his scoring average. Curry, for instance, is suffering a down season to begin 2016-17 — causing him to slip into the same archetypal category as DeRozan (quelle horreur!) — but he’s still been a better player, according to BPM, than his 26.6-PPG would suggest. And DeRozan himself isn’t far from the apex of what a one-dimensional scorer can be. He currently ranks 94th in BPM out of the 1,162 qualified player-seasons that fit into the archetype since 1976-77.It’s also possible that the traditional statistical outlook on “pure” scorers misses some of the complexities of team dynamics. In the same way that the Warriors can cram more skill sets onto the floor by adding Kevin Durant — the rare superstar who also functions as a floor-spacing sharpshooter — perhaps scorers who can carry an inordinate burden without leaking efficiency allow teams to stuff the rest of the roster with more diversely talented players. But even if that’s the case, it hasn’t turned up in the stats yet, despite a lot of people looking for a way to pin down that dynamic (or something like it) over the years. The debate over the value of one-dimensional scorers is far from settled even in today’s age of advanced analytics, and there’s plenty of evidence that it’s difficult to replace what a top scorer brings to his team. But the numbers also suggest that certain playing styles tend to produce less value than others. It will be interesting to see if that holds true even when the performance is as prolific as DeRozan’s has been early this season.Check out our latest NBA predictions.
A Lorain County jail official has confirmed via telephone to The Lantern that Ohio State redshirt-freshman defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle has been arrested and charged with rioting, failure to disperse, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.Sprinkle is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, according to a jail official.According to a Lorain County jail official, Sprinkle’s drug charges were not for possession of heroin.Sprinkle, who has yet to see the field in his time in Columbus, was a 2012 Associated Press first team All-Ohio selection out of Elyria High School. Bayern München’s president Uli Hoeness, wanted to remind everybody that the German giants won’t be favorites vs Borussia Dortmund. If you thought that next weekend will be exciting only because England will have a Derby, Bayern’s president Uli Hoeness was gracious enough to remind everybody that Germany will also have Der Klassiker between the Bavarian squad and Borussia Dortmund. This match is arguably the biggest event in the Bundesliga every year, it usually has the bigger club as the absolute favorite but this season things are going to be very different.Dortmund is currently amongst the most exciting squads in all of Europe, their latest defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League is no indicator of the real level of performance they have brought to the domestic competition this season.Bayern München’s top board members are very aware of how complicated next Saturday’s match will be and they won’t let the illusion of Dortmund’s latest defeat deceive them in any shape or form. The German giants have gotten too many negative results in the current season, this is what will keep them from getting too confident and the perfect excuse for them to go all out against the Bundesliga’s revelation.⭐️ #UCL-Gruppe A nach vier Spielen:1⃣ Borussia Dortmund (9 Pkt.)2. @Atleti (9)3. @ClubBrugge (4)4. @AS_Monaco (1) pic.twitter.com/kyYu0A4XlT— Borussia Dortmund (@BVB) November 6, 2018Regardless of how much power Bayern München has for this upcoming Der Klassiker, there is no way to overlook the sensational performances that many of the young talented players Borussia Dortmund have been delivering every single week.Starting with their ‘secret weapon’ Jadon Sancho, the young English international who is already established as one of the best players in Europe after only a few months of constant delivery of stellar performances for his new club.We can also mention the great first season that Moroccan left-back Achraf Hakimi is also having with Borussia Dortmund, the Real Madrid product who is destined to go back to Los Blancos and become the Marcelo replacement the club had been looking for so long. And what can we even say about young sensation Christian Pulisic, an already well-established star inside the club who is arguably amongst the most talented players of his generation and the United States’ best footballer today? All these kids are being led by German winger Marco Reus, an experienced forward who is starting to look like he could be about to have the best season of his career.Merson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. The Senate on Wednesday stripped from the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill language directing the Defense Department to privatize up to five commissaries through a two-year pilot program.Lawmakers also passed a second procedural vote to end debate on the annual policy bill, setting up a final vote for passage which likely will take place Thursday. The 84-14 vote also signaled the Democrats’ decision not to filibuster the authorization bill over its reliance on DOD’s overseas contingency operations account to exceed the Budget Control Act spending caps. Instead, Senate Democrats will resume that fight over the defense spending bill. The party is expected to block a vote, which could come today, to debate the spending measure in the Senate. Before voting to invoke cloture on the underlying bill, the Senate approved language requiring DOD to assess the costs and benefits of privatizing military grocery stores prior to launching a pilot program to evaluate privatization. The amendment was offered by Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), but it was modified to include the text of a related amendment from Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), reported CQ.“This amendment puts all efforts to prioritize commissaries on hold, requiring instead an assessment on privatizing before we make significant changes to our service member’s commissary benefits,” Inhofe said in a joint press release. “There are too many unknowns as to whether privatization could directly impact military members’ ability to provide for their families as well as the potential for it to affect retention,” he stated. The House bill does not include language requiring DOD to test privatization. On Tuesday, the Senate rejected an amendment from David Vitter (R-La.) that would have established a floor of 32 Army brigade combat teams (BCTs) in the active and reserve Army components. That is the number of BCTs the Army will have at the end of the current fiscal year when it reaches an end strength of 490,000. Officials shortly are expected to announce further cuts that would shrink the Army by up to 70,000 additional troops and 10 to 12 BCTs. Dan Cohen AUTHOR
Vijay’s Bigil second look poster.PR HandoutThe second look poster from Vijay’s Bigil, which was earlier referred to as Thalapathy 63, is unveiled at 12 am on Saturday, 22 June, to coincide with the birthday celebration of the actor. It comes six hours after the first look was unveiled online at 6 pm on Friday. The first look had shown Vijay in two get-ups. He donned a shirt and dhoti for an aged role, while he is seen in a red color jersey with a football for the other character. The backdrop of a slum market and a machete in the poster give an indication of him playing the role of a gangster. The second look is a multi-dimensional poster of Vijay. The poster announces the name of the actor’s character as Michael. There are four avatars of the actor in the promotional material – a dhoti-clad look, a suit-donned look and two avatars in football jersey.Presumably, the story is set in North Chennai. There have been lots of movies made based on the underworld activities in North Chennai, which is considered as the underbelly of the capital city of Tamil Nadu.Going by the earlier reports, the story is about a football coach trying to win a cup for Tamil Nadu team in a national level competition. However, the first look gives an impression of something else and Atlee has something different into the store. The second look poster announces the name of Vijay’s character in Bigil.PR HandoutLike in Mersal, there might be an interesting flashback and revenge angle into the story. However, one should wait till the release of the teaser of the film, which is expected to be out in September, to get a rough idea about the content. The film has Nayanthara in the female lead and Jackie Shroff in the negative role. Yogi Babu, Anandraj and a host of actors in the supporting roles.

In this image made from video provided by Korea Broadcasting System (KBS), South Korean president Moon Jae-in, second from left, and his wife Kim Jung-sook, left, are welcomed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju upon their arrival in Pyongyang, North Korea on 18 September, 2018. Photo: APSouth Korean president Moon Jae-in arrived in North Korea on Tuesday for his third and possibly most challenging summit yet with leader Kim Jong Un in which he hopes to break an impasse in talks with the United States over the North’s denuclearisation and breathe energy into his own efforts to expand and improve relations between the Koreas. In what are by now familiar images of the two Korean leaders hugging and exchanging warm smiles, Kim greeted Moon at Pyongyang’s airport. They walked together past cheering crowds and a military honour guard, and then drove into the city, where security was higher than usual.Travelling with Moon are business tycoons including Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong, underscoring Moon’s hopes to expand cross-border business projects. Currently, all major joint projects between the Koreas are stalled because of US-led sanctions.Moon was expected to have talks with Kim on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Moon’s chief of staff. Moon and Kim were also expected to jointly announce the results of their talks on Wednesday if things go smoothly. Moon is to return to Seoul on Thursday.North Korea’s state-run media reported early Tuesday that Moon was to begin a visit, but said little else. It said the two will reaffirm their previous commitments to “peace, prosperity and the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.”Security was tight. Requests by The Associated Press to go to the airport or to drive around the city were denied. This is Moon’s first trip to the North Korean capital, though he has met Kim twice at the border village of Panmunjom. He is under intense pressure from Washington to advance the denuclearization process. Before his departure he said he intends to push for “irreversible, permanent peace” and for better dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington.”This summit would be very meaningful if it yielded a resumption of North Korea-US talks,” Moon said Tuesday morning just before his departure. “It’s very important for South and North Korea to meet frequently, and we are turning to a phase where we can meet anytime we want.”But his chief of staff tried to lower expectations of major progress on the future of Kim’s nuclear arsenal.Kim, meanwhile, is seemingly riding a wave of success. The North just completed an elaborate celebration replete with a military parade and huge rallies across the country to mark North Korea’s 70th anniversary. China, signalling its support for Kim’s recent diplomatic moves, sent its third-highest party official to those festivities. That’s important because China is the North’s biggest economic partner and is an important political counterbalance to the United States.North Korea maintains that it has developed its nuclear weapons to the point that it can now defend itself against a potential US attack, and can now shift its focus to economic development and improved ties with the South. While signaling his willingness to talk with Washington, Kim’s strategy has been to try to elbow the US away from Seoul so that the two Koreas can take the lead in deciding how to bring peace and stability to their peninsula.Talks between the United States and North Korea, which Moon brokered through his April and May summits with Kim, have stalled since Kim’s meeting with President Donald Trump in Singapore in June.North Korea has taken some steps, like dismantling its nuclear and rocket-engine testing sites, but U.S. officials have said it must take more serious disarmament steps before receiving outside concessions. Trump has indicated he may be open to holding another summit to resuscitate the talks, however. To keep expectations from getting too high, Moon’s chief of staff, Im Jong-seok, said it’s “difficult to have any optimistic outlook” for progress on denuclearization during the summit. But he said he still expects the summit to produce meaningful agreements that “fundamentally remove the danger of armed clashes and ease fears of war” between the two Koreas.South Korea last week opened a liaison office in the North’s city of Kaesong, near the Demilitarized Zone. Another possible area of progress could be on a formal agreement ending the Korean War, which was halted in 1953 by what was intended to be a temporary armistice. Military officials have discussed possibly disarming a jointly controlled area at the Koreas’ shared border village, removing front-line guard posts and halting hostile acts along their sea boundary.Moon is the third South Korean leader to visit North Korea’s capital for summits. Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun went to Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007 respectively to meet Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il. Those trips produced a slew of inter-Korean rapprochement projects, which were suspended after conservatives took power in Seoul.
This combination of pictures created on 8 January shows files photos of FBI Director Robert Mueller (L) on 19 June 2013, in Washington, DC; and US President Donald Trump on 15 December 2017, in Washington, DC. Photo: AFPUS prosecutors revealed Friday that a Russian offered cooperation to Donald Trump’s campaign as early as 2015, declaring that the president’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen had provided “relevant” and “substantial” help to the Russia investigation. In a separate case, federal prosecutors demanded “substantial” jail time of between 51 to 63 months—four to five years—for Cohen for bank fraud and campaign finance violations to which he plead guilty last August.US Attorney Robert Khuzami accused the 52-year-old, who once vowed to take a bullet for the president, of being motivated by “personal greed” and of “repeatedly” using his power and influence for “deceptive ends.”“Totally clears the President. Thank you!” tweeted the US president cryptically as television networks were consumed by the Cohen documents—which the White House dismissed as revealing “nothing of value.”The campaign finance violations to which Cohen pleaded guilty in August concerned hush payments he made on Trump’s behalf to alleged former lovers of the president, including porn star Stormy Daniels.Robert Mueller, the special counsel heading up the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 vote, followed up with a separate filing saying Cohen had made “substantial and significant efforts to remediate his misconduct, accept responsibility for his actions, and assist” the special investigation, a thorn in Trump’s side.Cohen continued to provide “relevant and truthful information” to assist the probe, holding seven sessions with investigators, “many of them lengthy, and continues to make himself available to investigators,” it said.He had provided information about contacts with Russian interests during the campaign, attempts by Russians to reach the campaign and about contacts with “persons connected to the White House” in 2017-2018, the filing added.Around November 2015, some five months after Trump launched his bid for the presidency and well before previously reported contacts, Cohen spoke to a purported “trusted person” in the Russian Federation who offered the campaign “political synergy” and “synergy on a government level.”Cohen said the person “repeatedly proposed” a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, claiming it could have a “phenomenal” impact “not only in political but in a business dimension as well.”“Cohen, however, did not follow up on this invitation,” the filing added.Trump claims ‘cleared’The former fixer last week pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in connection with a Moscow real estate deal, which was being pursued as late as one month before Trump officially became the Republican nominee for president.Due to his help, Mueller declined to recommend additional jail time for Cohen for lying to Congress.Recent filings in the Mueller probe have suggested the White House knew that Cohen planned to lie to lawmakers about his contacts with Russians. They also suggest Trump and his family were in the loop on discussions with Russians on a Moscow project, even after the real estate tycoon secured the Republican nomination in mid-2016.Trump’s spokeswoman Sarah Sanders dismissed the latest filings in Cohen’s case, saying they “tell us nothing of value that wasn’t already known.”“Mr Cohen has repeatedly lied and as the prosecution has pointed out to the court, Mr Cohen is no hero,” she said. But Mueller has been inching ever closer to the White House, and early on Friday Trump fired off a feverish volley of tweets against a probe he dubs a “witch hunt,” accusing Mueller of “big time conflicts of interest” and alleging the prosecutor coerced false testimony from witnesses. The commander-in-chief vowed his lawyers would produce a “major Counter Report” to rebut Mueller’s findings, as and when he delivers them.Attorney general switchShortly afterward, Trump announced his intention to nominate William Barr as his new attorney general—succeeding Jeff Sessions, who he sacked last month.Sessions had angered the president by recusing himself from overseeing the Mueller probe because of his own contacts with Russian officials.Barr—a former attorney general under the late George HW Bush—is considered something of a consensus candidate for the highly sensitive post.He does, however, have a record of endorsing strong executive powers, which could come into play if Mueller sought to compel Trump to testify.Barr has also voiced concerns about a number of Mueller’s team donating to the Democratic Party.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer warned Barr must commit, under oath, that the Russia investigation “will proceed unimpeded” and that the final report will be made available to Congress and the public “immediately.”In Washington, Mueller also detailed multiple “lies” that former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort told investigators, leading to a termination of his cooperation deal, which could lead to a stiffer jail sentence for the 69-year-old.A heavily redacted court filing said that Manafort’s “lies” included untruths about his dealings with Konstantin Kilimnik, a business associate who US officials suspect is a Russian intelligence operative, and about his contacts with Trump administration officials after striking a plea agreement. The White House similarly dismissed that filing, arguing it “says absolutely nothing about the President.”“Once again the media is trying to create a story where there isn’t one,” said Sanders.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said on its official Twitter account that the situation has been contained.ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A disgruntled former employee opened fire Monday inside a Florida awning factory, killing five workers before killing himself, authorities said.Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings described the shooter as a 45-year-old man who had been fired in April and had been previously accused of assaulting a co-worker. The attacker was not believed to be a member of any type of subversive or terrorist organization, he said. The man was not charged when he was accused of battering the co-worker in June 2014, and his previous criminal record was otherwise minor — marijuana possession and driving under the influence, the sheriff said. The co-worker he allegedly beat up three years ago was not among the victims Monday, the sheriff added.Shelley Adams said her sister, Sheila McIntyre, called her from the company’s bathroom during the shooting and kept repeating, “My boss is dead. My boss is dead.”Fiamma Inc. calls itself one of the largest manufacturers of awnings for camper vans, motor coaches and sport utility vehicles.State and federal law enforcement officers converged on the awning business in an industrial park in Orlando shortly after 8 a.m. after a woman ran out and called 911 from a tile business across the street, said Yamaris Gomez, that store’s owner.“All she kept saying was he was holding a gun and told her to get out,” Gomez said.Officers were dispatched within 45 seconds and arrived two minutes later, the sheriff said. The FBI also responded, said Ron Hopper, who runs the FBI’s Orlando office. And while five people were killed, “seven others’ lives were saved due to the quick actions of the officers who arrived on the scene today,” said Special Agent Danny Banks of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.Authorities had no reports of any specific threats the gunman made to people at the company or anyone else, Banks said. The attack shows why people need to alert authorities whenever they learn of anything that could lead to violence, Banks said.“If people see something that seems abnormal, they need to say something,” Orlando Mayor Teresa Jacobs added.Sen. Bill Nelson called for more action to address mental health issues. He noted that next Monday will mark a year since the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, at a gay nightclub in Orlando. The attack at the Pulse club killed 49 people and wounded dozens more.“The city of Orlando, which is still healing from the Pulse massacre, has seen too much violence this past year,” the Florida Democrat said in a statement.Republican Gov. Rick Scott asked “all Floridians to pray for the families impacted by this senseless act of violence.”___Associated Press Writer Freida Frisaro in Miami contributed to this report.___The story has been edited to correct spelling of last name of sheriff to Demings, not Demmings.
